Estimating oxygen decay coefficient for acid generating waste rock 1

چکیده
Measuring or predicting the distribution of oxygen concentration in waste rock underneath a soil cover is an important aspect of cover performance evaluation. The oxygen decay coefficient is a key parameter in the prediction. In the present study, a method calculating oxygen decay coefficient from oxygen consumption rate is developed. The decrease in oxygen concentration over time measured above a thin layer of waste rock (<12 mm) in a box was used to calculate oxygen consumption rate and oxygen decay coefficient for waste rock from Mattabi mine near Ignace, Ontario, Canada. The results indicate that the calculated oxygen decay coefficient from the proposed method is similar to that obtained from fitting of measured oxygen concentrations with the computer program POLLUTEv.6. The oxygen decay coefficient is influenced not only by oxygen consumption rate but also by physical characteristics of waste rock piles. Additional

AN OVERVIEW OF PREDICTION AND CONTROL OF AIR FLOW IN ACID-GENERATING WASTE ROCK DUMPS By:
Air movement and associated oxygen transport through waste rock dumps has the potential to significantly enhance the rate of oxidation of pyrite-bearing material. While this is a desired outcome for most heap leach operations, airflow in waste rock storage facilities can result in significant increases in generation and acceleration of acid rock drainage. Hence, a good understanding of internal...
متن کاملA Correlation for Estimating LCPC Abrasivity Coefficient using Rock Properties
Rock abrasivity, as one of the most important parameters affecting the rock drillability, significantly influences the drilling rate in mines. Therefore, rock abrasivity should be carefully evaluated prior to selecting and employing drilling machines. Since the tests for a rock abrasivity assessment require sophisticated laboratory equipment, empirical models can be used to predict rock a...
متن کاملOxygen influx and geochemistry of percolate water from reactive mine waste rock underlying a sloping channelled soil cover
An ideal engineered soil cover can mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD) by limiting water and gaseous O2 ingress into an underlying waste rock pile. However, the barrier layer in the soil cover almost invariably tends to develop cracks or fractures after placement. These cracks may change water flow and O2 transport in the soil cover and decrease performance in the long run. The present study empl...
متن کاملApplication of Schmidt rebound number for estimating rock strength under specific geological conditions
A literature review revealed that most of the empirical equations introduced for determination of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rocks based on the Schmidt hammer rebound number (N) are not sufficiently reliable mostly due to the relatively low coefficient of correlations. This is attributed to the fact that in most cases one formula is used for all types of rocks, altho...

Assays were carried out to evaluate the dissolved oxygen uptake resulting from mineralization of humic substances (fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA)) from different sources: sediment, dissolved organic matter (DOM) of 120-day decomposed aquatic macrophyte (Scirpus cubensis and Cabomba piauhyensis), and lagoon DOM. The experiments were also aimed at estimating the oxygen uptake coefficient of...
